Russia Escalates Protests Over Soviet Military Burial Sites

(MENAFN) Russia intensified diplomatic pressure on Monday after summoning Lithuania's chargé d'affaires, Jolanta Tubaite, over plans to dismantle a burial site for Soviet soldiers and officers in the Lithuanian town of Vevis.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry accused Lithuania of pursuing what it described as an ongoing effort to remove Soviet military memorials and graves across the country. The ministry said it delivered a formal protest to Tubaite, citing concerns over the treatment of Soviet-era burial sites.

The latest diplomatic clash follows a previous Russian complaint issued on April 30 regarding proposed changes affecting another Soviet war memorial in the city of Siauliai.

Russian authorities reiterated that the destruction or desecration of military graves constitutes a criminal offense under Russian legislation, warning that Moscow has identified those it believes are involved in such actions.

"The Lithuanian representative was once again reminded that the destruction, damage or desecration of military graves, including those located abroad, is a criminal offense in the Russian Federation. All individuals personally responsible for this are well known in Moscow," it said.

In a separate development, Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, condemned Romania's decision to declare Russia's consul general in Constanța persona non grata and revoke approval for the operation of the Russian consular office in the city.

Zakharova said Moscow would take retaliatory action in response to the move, with details to be announced at a later stage.

"The unfriendly actions of the Romanian authorities will certainly not go unanswered," Zakharova said, adding that specific retaliatory measures would be announced later.
